Hematuria

This means the presence of blood in the urine. This could be noticed by the patient when the urine is frankly bloody (Macroscopic hematuria) or it could be microscopic and only detected on urinalysis

Not all red urine is indicative of bleeding. Certain situations may be associated with red urine in the absence of actual bleeding. For example certain food dyes may be excreted in the urine and thus change the urine color. Also, some medications may change the urine color.

What are the causes of hematuria?

Causes  of hematuria include:

  • Tumors
  • Trauma
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Kidney stones
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Infections

What is the usual workup of hematuria?

The physician after a careful history and physical examination will direct the work up to confirm the diagnosis. Laboratory data may include an IMP (Intravenous Pyelography) which may be abnormal in patients with stones or tumors, CT scan of the abdomen and urinary tract, Urinalysis, collection of urine for protein , examination of the urine for malignant cells (Cytology), urine cultures
